Scott Greenham’s Sixty Minutes for Six Months

By Jared Abbott - Special to JackalsHockey.com
J.T. Brown received a pass from the blue line, drove to the net down the left wing side and ripped a quick shot as the final seconds ticked off the clock. That was the last save Scott Greenham made in a professional game for quite some time. The date was April 21, 2013. He wouldn’t see game action again (postseason, exhibition, or regular season) until the fourth week of October 2013.
“It was nice to be able to prove to myself, not just the coaches there, but to myself that I can still play at that level,” said Greenham. “You always kind of doubt yourself if you haven’t played there in a while so it was just nice to know I still could do that.”
On Saturday, October 26 the Ottawa, Ontario native drew his first assignment since his 11-minute relief duty as a Binghamton Senator. This time Greenham donned the Elmira Jackals sweater and took the ice against the defending Kelly Cup Champion Reading Royals.
“I was pretty nervous going in,” said Greenham. “I tried to gather my thoughts to make sure my head was focused on the game and keep positive reinforcement by telling myself I could do this.”
With such a long layoff from game action it was important to make the first save and settle in early. Greenham was determined to make the first save to calm his nerves and ease himself into the game.
“On the first shot of the game I always look to make the first save,” said Greenham. “It was a different first save of the game. It was a dump in from just inside the red line that took a weird bounce and went off my pad. I made a nice rebound save on Louie Caporusso so that helped me get into the game to have those two quick saves.”
Although Greenham doesn’t necessarily prefer to see plenty of rubber he benefited from a busy start last Saturday.
“I always feel more sharp when I am continuously getting more shots,” said Greenham. “That was beneficial for me to see that many shots early in the season and get my confidence going.”
The 26-year-old netminder faced 47 shots against Reading and stopped 46 of them. Accepting the responsibility of keeping his team in the game isn’t easy on any occasion, but doing so without playing in the preseason or the first two regular season games can be especially daunting. Yet Greenham was able to prepare himself in practice and when the opportunity presented itself he was ready to answer the call.
“I tried in practice during certain drills to make sure I was sharp,” said Greenham. “I worked hard in those drills and did well so I knew I had that edge. I always play better in games than I do in practice so I was hoping that would come out in the game and luckily it did.”
Greenham also attributed his preparedness to his summer workouts with the Ottawa Senators. He contacted current Senator Chris Neil and inquired about attending camp. The opportunity was open and for the third straight year Greenham had the chance to compete with NHL players.
“Usually when the Ottawa goalies would come into town I would get booted out but this past summer since I signed with the organization I was able to stay there right up until training camp,” said Greenham. “That really helped especially when all their main guys like Spezza were coming back and I was able to go against them which prepared me for this season.”
The competitiveness and game-like action contributed to Greenham’s honed skills this year. He also picked the brains of Criag Anderson and Robin Lehner and learned from their techniques and how they handle themselves on the ice.
The extra effort over the summer was put on display this past Saturday through Greenham’s stellar performance. After a six month wait the 6-2 190-pound goaltender was pleased to earn the victory, but was humble about his personal success.
“It was definitely a relief to get the win,” said Greenham. “Nothing personal there, it was just nice for the team to get the win.”
Although unpredictability is the only thing we can predict over a 72-game season, Greenham has a tremendous mindset for the remainder of the year.
“I’m just going to try and approach every game like I approached last game and stay mentally strong throughout the season,” said Greenham.

The Road To The Show Presented by Liberty Travel

ELMIRA, N.Y. - As the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Ottawa Senators and New Jersey Devils, and the AHL's Binghamton Senators and Albany Devils, the Jackals are tasked with developing prospects throughout the organizations. The Road To The Show presented by Liberty Travel provides details on how those prospects are progressing.
Ottawa Senators (NHL) – Ottawa is struggling to string together wins early in the 2013-14 campaign. This past week the Senators were 1-2 with both losses coming at home. Ottawa currently sits sixth in the Atlantic Division with a 4-5-2 record. On the bright side Ottawa does not have any current injuries. Last week Ottawa recalled Mika Zibanejad and Derek Grant. In three NHL games Zibanejad has two points, including a power-play goal scored Friday night vs. Anaheim. On Sunday the 2011 sixth overall selection played 17:36 and finished +1. Grant doesn’t have any points in four games thus far but saw 14:12 total ice time on Sunday.
Binghamton Senators (AHL) – This past weekend Binghamton stayed home and split two games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Adirondack. The Senators currently sit third in the East Division with a 5-3 record. On Friday the B-Sens handed the Penguins their first loss this season. Before taking the ice Saturday the Senators were busy in the transaction department. Ottawa reassigned Ludwig Karlsson to Binghamton from Elmira. The Swede finished the game Saturday with four shots on goal and a -1 rating. Ottawa also reassigned Jakub Culek and Troy Rutkowski to Elmira from Binghamton. Culek had zero points in two games and Rutkowski had one goal in four games with the B-Sens. Former Jackal Chris Wideman scored his first goal of the season on Saturday and has seven points in seven games.
New Jersey Devils (NHL) – The Devils improved their record to 2-5-4 with a 1-0-1 record this past week and currently sit sixth in the Metropolitan Division. However, the injury losses suffered this weekend outweigh the positive results. Cory Schneider did not travel to Boston for Saturday’s game and was placed on the injured reserve with a lower body injury. New Jersey also lost Bryce Salvador to the IR with a stress fracture in his foot. Both players join Ryane Clowe who remains on the IR with a head injury. Eric Gelinas was recalled by New Jersey last Wednesday, returned to Albany on Sunday, and then recalled by New Jersey again on Monday in the wake of Salvador’s injury. Goalie Keith Kinkaid went through the same process due to the injury to Schneider. Kinkaid was recalled by New Jersey on Saturday, returned to Albany on Sunday, and recalled by New Jersey today.
Albany Devils (AHL) – Amidst the recent whirlwind of transactions, Albany has remained steady on the ice. The Devils improved their record to 5-2-0-1 with a 2-1 record this past week. They currently sit third in the Northeast Division. To fill the hole left by Keith Kinkaid the Devils recalled Maxime Clermont from Elmira. Clermont was 0-2 with a 3.05 goals-against-average and a .838 save-percentage this season with the Jackals. He did not see any action in Albany’s game on Saturday.

Jackals Stonewall Reading For First Win

READING, Pa. - The Elmira Jackals used a 46 save performance from Scott Greenham and three points from Jordon Southorn (2 goals, 1 assist) to claim a 3-1 win over the Reading Royals on Saturday night. The win improved Elmira's record to 1-2-0 on the young season.

Click here for tonight's box score.
The first period was a struggle for control early on as neither the Jackals nor Royals could assert themselves as the dominant team. That changed midway through the period when Greenham was tagged with a delay of game minor. The Royals peppered the net with four shots during the advantage, but Greenham swatted each one away. The power play's momentum carried on for Reading, though, and they held Elmira without a shot for nearly ten minutes of play in the first. But things swung Elmira's way when, on the power play, Southorn fed a shot through a screen for his first goal of the season with 1:48 left in the stanza. Jakub Culek, who made his Jackals debut tonight, picked up his first pro point with an assist.
Elmira carried that lead into the second and built on it quickly. Southorn was fed at the center point by Danny New and rifled a slap shot past Riley Gill to put the Jackals in front by a pair with 4:05 gone by. Reading stayed persistent and tested Greenham with many quality chances. They finally broke through with a slap shot from defenseman Michael Cajkovsky 4:51 after Southorn's goal. But the Jackals bounced right back with Artem Demkov spiking  home a centering feed from Philip-Michael Devos. The goal was Demkov's first of the season and Devos netted his third assist in as many games.
The Royals threw everything they had at Greenham in the third period, which amounted to 15 shots, but the Jackals' netminder held his ground throughout the final stanza. Elmira had a chance to ice the game when Reading pulled Gill for the extra attacker with over a minute left, but Jordan Pietrus missed from the neutral zone and the final was set at 3-1.
Greenham earned his first win of the season with 46 saves for the Jackals, while Gill stopped 22 in the loss. Elmira ended the night 2-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Mark your calendars! The Jackals return home on November 1, 2013 to take on the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m. The Jackals will be giving away free magnetic schedules to the fans in attendance. Elmira Jackals Game Preview Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Reading

READING, Pa. - The Elmira Jackals finish a weekend home-and-home pair with a visit to the Reading Royals tonight. The Jackals are looking to snap a short two game skid and pick up their first win of the season.
WHO: Elmira Jackals - Ottawa and New Jersey/NHL & Binghamton and Albany/AHL (0-2-0) vs. Reading Royals - Washington/NHL & Hershey/AHL (2-1-0).
WHAT: Jackals Road Game #2. Game broadcast on Gem 98.7 begins at 6:45. Click here to listen live online.
WHERE: Santander Arena - 700 Penn Street., Reading, Pa. 19602
WHEN: 7:05 p.m.
The Jackals are facing the Royals tonight for the second of 16 meetings this season and first of nine at Santander Arena. The Jackals went 7-7-2 against the Royals last season and ran their all-time record to 43-30-9 against Reading. Last year's head-to-head record included a 3-4-1 record for Elmira on the road against a Reading team that went 26-8-2 on its home ice. The Jackals have faced the Royals more times (82) and beaten them more times (43) than any other team in the ECHL. This year will add to that stat since the Royals are Elmira's most common opponent. A new element to the rivalry is that three former Jackals from the 11-12 and 12-13 teams - Dustin Gazley, Louie Caporusso, and Matt Campanale, all play for Reading now.
The Jackals will rack up plenty of miles over the first five weeks of the 13-14 season. They play eight of their first 11 games away from the friendly confines of First Arena. They visit Wheeling four times, Reading twice, Florida twice, and Orlando once. The Jackals combined to go 5-10-1 in those buildings last year with three of the five victories coming in Reading. Overall the Jackals were 18-15-3 on the road last season which produced their third most road wins since joining the ECHL. From November 22 to December 11 the Jackals play eight of nine at home.

Elmira Jackals Stumble in Home Opener

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals welcomed a crowd of 3,685 on their home opener on Friday night, but the Reading Royals spoiled the party with a 3-1 victory over the Jackals. Elmira's record fell to 0-2-0 with the defeat.

The Jackals' speed and energy allowed them to control action for long stretches of play throughout the first period. They also pressured the Royals into three penalties that gave the Jackals some golden scoring opportunities. It all produced a 13-4 shot advantage for the stanza, but Reading goalie Riley Gill answered the bell at every call. At the other end of the ice, Elmira's Maxime Clermont had a moment of his own to shine. Reading's Domenic Monardo got loose on a breakaway and tried to slide it along the ice past Clermont. But the third-year pro trapped it underneath him and kept the Royals off of the board.
The second period was more of the same for the Jackals which meant plenty of scoring opportunities, but no pucks that got behind Gill. The first great chance came on a 2-on-0 shorthanded breakaway for Artem Demkov and Jordan Pietrus. Demkov deked and shot low glove side, but Gill sprawled to make the save. Towards the end of the period Jean Bourbeau had a shot trickle off of Gill towards an open net, but Reading defenseman Ryan Kavanagh swatted it away. Reading was able to capitalize on a broken play midway through the second and took a 1-0 lead on Domenic Monardo's first goal as a pro.
Reading's offense was sparked by a pair of former Jackals in the third period. Louie Caporusso deflected a point shot from Aaron Gens 1:52 into the stanza for what proved to be the winning goal. The Royals needed Gill's continued brilliance through the third as the Jackals continued to pepper him with shots. Jordan Pietrus gave Jordon Southorn a great look on a 2-on-1 but Gill's pokecheck kept the pass from ever reaching its target. Dustin Gazley then scored unassisted off of a turnover to put Reading ahead 3-0 with just under three minutes remaining. Rookie Ludwig Karlsson gave Elmira life at 18:21 with his first goal as a pro, but a comeback wasn't in the cards for Elmira tonight.
Clermont shouldered the loss while stopping 16 of 19 shots. Gill claimed the win with 33 saves. Elmira ended the game 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

Jackals Unable to Win Seventh Straight Season Opener

WHEELING, W. Va. - The Elmira Jackals put up a late surge, but were undone by an 0-for-7 effort on the power play on Friday night. They fell 3-2 to the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena to open the 2013-14 season.

Click here for tonight's box score.
Each team had its special teams units tested often in the first period. The Jackals and Nailers were each afforded two power play chances and, while neither cashed in, Wheeling used the momentum from its first chance to grab an early lead. After killing off a too many men on the ice minor the Jackals were looking to spring Matt Carter on an odd man rush as he exited the box. Chris Minella picked off the pass, though, and his turning wrist shot beat Maxime Clermont to the stick side. The goal came on Wheeling's first shot of the game. The Jackals outshot the Nailers 8-4 over the remainder of the period but could not beat rookie goalie Mike Condon to tie the score.
The second period felt eerily similar to the first period as the Jackals continued to generate quality scoring chances that were turned away by Condon. In total 12 shots arrived on net, but Condon made several tough saves to keep the Jackals off of the scoreboard. Wheeling received the only power plays in the stanza and were able to cash in their first. A Carter Rowney faceoff win gave the puck to Zach Torquato at the point and his slap shot beat Clermont through a screen. The Jackals' netminder turned in eight saves in the frame.
Elmira was given five power play opportunities in the third period, including just over 1:45 of a 5-on-3, but missed out on each and saw the Nailers' lead swell to three before the Jackals' offense got on track. Minella converted a 2-on-1 for his second goal of the night at 13:54. The Jackals dug in, though, and got a pretty goal from Matt Carter to pull back within two at 15:36. Carter took a feed at center from Jordon Southorn, beat a defender in open ice, and lobbed a shot over Condon's shoulder for his first of the season. Elmira captain Jean Bourbeau followed 2:45 later with his first, but that's as close as the Jackals would get.
Clermont shouldered the loss in stopping 15 shots. Condon turned away 40 in earning the win. Elmira ended the night 0-for-7 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Mark your calendars! The Jackals went 6-4-0 against the Nailers last season and ran their all-time record to 34-16-5 against Wheeling. Last year's head-to-head record included a 2-3-0 record for Elmira at WesBanco against a Wheeling team that went 21-8-7 on its home ice. The Jackals and Nailers played an exhibition game in Wheeling on October 5 and Elmira skated away with a 5-4 OT win after trailing 4-0 heading into the third period. Both teams fielded rosters mainly comprised of tryout players that night and only ten players combined between the teams made opening day rosters after skating in that game.
This year's Jackals team features 11 players on the opening-day roster who suited up for the 2012-13 team. That number is only one less than the 2013-13 team that, over the course of the entire season, used 12 players who also played on the 2011-12 squad. Jean Bourbeau, Rob Bellamy, Jordan Pietrus, and Artem Demkov are all back for their third season in Elmira and have helped the Jackals to 85 regular season wins over the last two years.

Elmira Jackals Announce Affiliation With New Jersey Devils

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals announced today that they have entered into an affiliation agreement with the National Hockey League's New Jersey Devils. The Devils join the Ottawa Senators as Jackals affiliates for the 2013-14 season.
"We are extremely happy to partner with the New Jersey Devils and Albany Devils as affiliates. The entire Devils organization has a first-class reputation for success on and off the ice, and we will work extremely hard to give their prospects the proper environment to develop and advance their careers," said Jackals owner and president Nate Cook.
The 2013-14 season will be the first for the Jackals and Devils as affiliates. Elmira did, however, receive goaltender Maxime Clermont on reassignment from New Jersey during the 2012-13 season. New Jersey has won the Stanley Cup in 1995, 2000, and 2003, and also advanced to the Stanley Cup finals in 2001 and 2012. The Devils have reached the playoffs in 21 of 25 years since moving to New Jersey from Denver, Colorado in 1982.
The Albany Devils were founded in 2010 after the Albany River Rats relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina. It is the second time Albany has housed the Devils' AHL affiliate after the River Rats served in that capacity from 1993 to 2006.
"The Devils organization is excited to enter into a formal affiliation with the Elmira Jackals and congratulate their new ownership group led by Tom Freeman and Nate Cook," said New Jersey Devils Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations and Albany General Manager Chris Lamoriello. "I look forward to again working with Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Dwight Mullins. I know under his leadership, the Jackals not only will be competing for a championship, but also developing players for future success in the game."
The Jackals will open the 2013-14 season with four players from the Devils organization on their roster. Clermont has been reassigned to Elmira from Albany by New Jersey. He will look to improve on his 20 win season from 12-13. Defenseman Harry Young has also been reassigned to Elmira from Albany by New Jersey. The 6-4, 225 pound blue liner is in his fourth year as a pro. He has produced three goals, nine assists, a +8 rating, and 134 penalty minutes in 72 ECHL games combined between Kalamazoo and Trenton.
Additionally, defenseman Raman Hrabarenka (ROW-man, RAH-ba-ren-ka) and forward Riley Boychuk have been loaned to the Jackals by the Albany Devils. Hrabarenka, a native of Mogilev, Belarus, is a 6-3, 215 pound rearguard who notched five points (1 goal, 4 assists) in 34 games with Albany last year. Boychuck is a 6-4, 220 pound winger who is in his third year as a pro. Originally a seventh-round pick (#208 overall) by Buffalo in 2010, he has 9 goals, 15 assists, 81 penalty minutes in 87 pro games divided between the AHL, ECHL, and Central Hockey League.

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals announced today that they have renewed their affiliation agreement with the National Hockey League's Ottawa Senators. The 2013-14 season will be the sixth consecutive that the Jackals and Senators have worked together.
"We are thrilled to continue our relationship with the Ottawa and Binghamton Senators. The Jackals are committed to providing the best possible environment for Senators prospects to develop, and we can't wait to start this season," said Jackals owner and president Nate Cook.
As the ECHL affiliate of the Senators, the Jackals will receive players under contract to Ottawa, or the American Hockey League's Binghamton Senators, for the purpose of developing them as professionals so that they may advance their career.
The Jackals and Senators began their affiliation in 2008 and since then Elmira has gone on to win 193 games (38.6 wins per season) and qualify for the playoffs each year. In that time Ottawa has qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs three times while Binghamton has advanced to the Calder Cup playoffs three times and captured its first Calder Cup championship in 2011.
Since the affiliation began, three Jackals have gone on to play games for Ottawa. Notable players who have gone on to play for Elmira and Binghamton are; Ben Blood, Louie Caporusso, Corey Cowick, Jack Downing, Dustin Gazley, Maxime Gratchev, Chris Holt, Chaz Johnson, Danny New, Yannick Tifu, and Chris Wideman.
"The Ottawa Senators are committed to its organizational philosophy of drafting and developing its own players. This is why we continue our strong relationship with our partners in Elmira and Binghamton. This working relationship has proved to be very successful in the development in a number of our prospects in recent years.  We look forward to strengthening this relationship even further in the years to come," said Ottawa Senators director of hockey operations and player development Randy Lee.

Elmira Jackals Topple the Royals

Jordan Pietrus picked up where he left off after a career-best 59 points last year and sparked the offense with a goal and an assist. Maxime Clermont anchored the defense and made several important stops as the clock wound down and Elmira protected a one-goal lead.
Reading opened up the scoring early in the first period with a power play goal from Stanislav Galiev. As he worked off of the left point, Galiev one-timed a pass from T.J. Syner with only 1:42 gone by. Former Jackal Louie Caporusso also assisted on the goal. The Jackals regrouped after the early setback and launched 11 shots in the period. But Reading goalie Brandon Anderson thwarted each attempt and Reading took the lead into the first intermission.
Elmira swung momentum in its favor in the second stanza during a stretch of four-on-four play. Rookie defenseman Zach McCullough broke up a Reading entry attempt at the blue line and started a counter attack with Pietrus in tow. A quick feed from the left wing hit Pietrus on the door step and he jammed it past Anderson for the tying score. Clermont shut Reading down in the second with nine saves which allowed the Jackals to grab their first lead in the third period.
Another strong defensive effort by the Jackals led to a quick-strike opportunity and the go-ahead goal in the third. Riley Boychuk poked the puck away from a Reading attacker at the Elmira blue line and flicked it up ice to Justin Gvora. Gvora's shot from the right wing circle hit Anderson in the shoulder and popped into the air. When the rebound came back to the ice Michael Beaudry punched it across the line for his first goal of the preseason.
The Jackals took the lead with 7:12 gone by in the third and had to endure a stern test from the Royals. Clermont saw 13 shots in the third, including several from in tight with Reading using an extra attacker in the final minute. An apparent tying goal with less than 30 seconds left was waived off because the net was dislodged before the puck went in. Then with seven seconds left Rob Bellamy hit the empty net for the insurance marker with assists from Pietrus and Matt Carter.
Clermont logged 29 saves in the winning effort. The Jackals ended the night 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals announced today that they will hold open tryouts for the position of Blade on Wednesday, October 16 at 6:00 p.m. inside First Arena.

If the performer chooses to dance during the improvised skit, he or she will get a minute and a half to perform to a song of their choice, and then a minute and a half to perform to a song of the judges' choosing.
Performers should wear comfortable fitting athletic clothes to wear while in costume. Athletic shoes should also be worn while in costume and not on skates.
The Blade hopefuls will be evaluated and scored on skating ability, entertainment value, enthusiasm, improvisational skills, creativity, and leadership qualities.
A panel of celebrity guest judges will score each of the performers' tryouts. The panel is comprised of:
